Greeting words of the ministers
Germany and Egypt are linked in many different respects through long years of cooperation and exchanges in the fields of education and science: Good examples of this tradition and of the importance of German-Egyptian relations in education, science and technology include the three German schools, which have been providing Egyptian and German children with an excellent education for over a hundred years; the one hundredth anniversary of the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, which we will be celebrating this year; the still very young German University Cairo; as well as the long history of firms like Siemens in Egypt. The contacts between research institutions, universities and scientists have become so intensive that they now extend well beyond the traditional cooperation in disciplines such as Engineering or German Studies. Such cooperation in science and research not only makes a considerable contribution to understanding among nations but also leads to economic growth in both countries. It serves as a driver of innovative development. The "German-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology" is providing an outstanding platform for demonstrating the priority of science and research in our two countries, for honouring and intensifying our cooperation, for encouraging exchanges of scientists, and for shaping the future through the process of learning from one another. I look forward to interesting and informative events within the framework of the "German-Egyptian Science Year" and wish all participants every success. |

Dr. Annette Schavan |

Federal Minister of Education and Research
| With the increase of globalization in the new millennium, Egypt recognizes the pivotal role science and technology play in building the economy and future of Egyptians. Egypt and Germany possess all the essential tools necessary to build bridges of cultural and scientific development between North and South. Our two countries have much to gain from expanding co-operation in the fields of science, technology and innovation. We aim at expanding this partnership with multi-dimensional links to cover six thematic areas spanning most of the cutting edge technology frontiers. We acknowledge the fundamental role of Science, Technology and Innovation in shaping sustainable development, eradicating poverty, promoting social inclusion and improving quality of life. 2007 will be the "Year of German-Egyptian Science and Technology", which will enable joint research in areas such as water, medical science, material science, social science, renewable energy and biotechnology.
